Danish Design – The Manufacturers Quiz

Danish design is world-renowned for its timeless aesthetics, high quality, and exceptional craftsmanship. Behind the iconic furniture and lighting are several Danish manufacturers who have, for decades, created and preserved some of the most sought-after design classics. Here is an introduction to the biggest Danish producers who continue to uphold this proud tradition.

Fritz Hansen

Founded in 1872, Fritz Hansen is one of the most prestigious producers of Danish design. They are known for their collaboration with Arne Jacobsen, who created iconic furniture such as The Egg, The Swan, and The Series 7 Chair. Fritz Hansen has also produced works by Poul Kjærholm and Jaime Hayon.

Carl Hansen & Søn

Established in 1908, Carl Hansen & Søn is particularly known for producing Hans J. Wegner’s masterpieces, including the famous Wishbone Chair (CH24), CH07 Shell Chair, and CH25 Lounge Chair. Their furniture combines classic craftsmanship with timeless design and natural materials.

Louis Poulsen

With roots dating back to 1874, Louis Poulsen is one of the world’s leading producers of designer lighting. The company is best known for Poul Henningsen’s iconic PH lamps, including PH5, Artichoke, and table lamps, designed to provide glare-free and comfortable lighting.

PP Møbler

PP Møbler is a family-owned company that has specialized in handcrafted wooden furniture since 1953. They produce several of Hans J. Wegner’s most exclusive designs, including PP501 – The Round Chair and PP68 Dining Chair, with craftsmanship of the highest quality.

Finn Juhl / House of Finn Juhl

Since 2001, House of Finn Juhl has relaunched and produced Finn Juhl’s iconic furniture, including The Chieftain Chair, The Pelican Chair, and The Poet Sofa. Finn Juhl’s organic design and sculptural aesthetics have made his furniture highly sought-after collector’s pieces.

These manufacturers ensure that Danish design remains an essential part of both modern and classic interiors – and that the iconic furniture and lighting continue to live on for generations.
