Early Life and Education
Born in Tønder, Denmark, Wegner demonstrated an early interest in woodworking. He trained as a cabinetmaker in 1931 before continuing his education at the Danish School of Arts and Crafts in Copenhagen. This combination of practical woodworking skills and artistic design laid the foundation for his work.
Design Philosophy
Wegner was driven by a vision to create furniture that combined functionality, aesthetics, and comfort. His designs were characterized by a deep respect for the natural qualities of materials and an understanding of human needs for comfort. He described his chairs as “beautiful from all angles” and emphasized that good design should be simple and functional.
Iconic Works
Among Wegner’s most famous creations are the Wishbone Chair (CH24), the Papa Bear Chair (AP19), and the Windsor Chair (J16). His collaboration with Carl Hansen & Søn resulted in several iconic pieces that are still in production today. The CH25 and CH07 (Shell Chair) are further examples of his ability to balance elegance and innovation.
Wegner frequently worked with natural materials such as wood, leather, and paper cord, experimenting with form and structure to create designs that are both timeless and groundbreaking.
